Merging this in after some more guidelines by @rtmclay at the EasyBuild hackathon in Vienna.

@rtmclay: you should pull in the develop branch from the hpcugent repository for your lmod subcommand timings tests, since things will be different now (i.e. a lot less module commands being executed, no more lmod python update, etc.)
