Only those needed for a given file are checked.
The latter is a fork of the former and they seem to work the same way in this context.
I'm not sure how tidy could have handled the multiple concatenated binary files it was given previously.
That is, "multigrep <regex> file1 [file2...]"

I made some changes some time ago which never made it into a PR, so here they are.
