Data-Driven Optimization and Scalability of a Retail Pharmacy Firm

BDM Capstone Project – IIT Madras Online BS Degree Program

Student: Arya Mulay
Roll Number: 23F3002123

Project Overview

This repository documents a Business Data Management (BDM) capstone project completed as part of the IIT Madras Online BS Degree Program. The project focuses on solving real-world operational and financial challenges faced by a single-branch retail pharmacy operating in the Indian healthcare sector.

Using primary operational data collected directly from the organization, the study addresses two key business problems: scalability limitations caused by inefficient working capital utilization, and inventory inefficiencies resulting in overstocking and stockouts. The analysis integrates financial modeling, inventory analytics, and scenario-based simulations to derive data-driven insights.

The methodology includes working capital flow simulation, main branch profitability and reinvestment capacity analysis, monthly supply versus demand assessment, and Safety Stock and Reorder Point (ROP) modeling. All analytical choices are justified and aligned with BDM theory and business context.

The findings demonstrate that internal profit reinvestment is the most optimal and low-risk scalability strategy, while inventory optimization through scientific reorder policies significantly reduces capital lock-in and lost sales.

This project exemplifies the practical application of Business Data Management concepts using primary data to support informed managerial decision-making in small retail enterprises.
