InfoBand

A flutter application to help those with special needs and/or those incapacitated during medical emergencies.

Why InfoBand

We’ve seen first-hand the difficulties those with special needs experience in communicating, which can be critical in situations where they desperately need help but can’t communicate their needs. Even in adult day centers, the lack of crucial medical information during medical emergencies has led to delays and misunderstandings that could’ve led to life-threatening situations, as the person with them wasn’t fully aware of their companion’s medical needs and couldn’t relay that information directly to emergency responders. In these moments when the primary caregiver isn’t around, the lack of information and the inability of the nonverbal person to communicate with authorities can be critical.

An engineering solution that we're exploring through Applied Engineering is having nonverbal people wear bracelets that contain critical medical info on an NFC tag that can be accessed on an app by first responders. We would restrict access to the app to medical and emergency personnel to help protect the privacy of nonverbal individuals, as these professionals undergo specific training and adhere to ethical standards regarding patient and individual data confidentiality. We’ve put together a prototype and plan to test it with organizations including some local adult day centers to test and implement our bands to see if it’ll help diminish this unfair disparity that nonverbal people face in communication.
