How could America be so stupid as to elect a childish narcissistic psychopath who is so obviously unfit to hold any position of power.
I hope you enjoyed this election America because it is probably the last free and fair election you will get, once Project 2025 is implemented the results for the next election will be decided by a group of oligarchs in a back room before the election is even held.
All hail Tsar Donald the first.
This time he will have much less constraints on what he can do, his mentors and sponsors have learned from the 2016 trial run.
We know what Trump is planning. Throughout his election campaign, he told us exactly what kind of future he wants – for the US and for the world.
An authoritarian government. Women’s rights stripped away. LGBTIQ+ and minority communities under attack. Bans on migrant people arriving in the US, and mass deportation of those already in the country. A shift of global power, with the US aligned with autocracy, not democracy.
Trump is also likely to sell out Ukraine giving Putin exactly what he wants, the five oblasts he has illegally annexed officially recognised as part of Russia plus a halt to the fighting so that Putin can re-arm and build up his army again ready for the next bite of the cherry.
Trump could also pull the USA out of NATO.
And we can say goodbye to any chance of curbing climate change with massive subsidies for oil and gas drilling. The next four years would have been a crucial time for reducing greenhouse gas emissions but instead the USA will be full steam ahead with fossil fuels.
If you have looked at Project 2025, do you comprehend what a shift to a far right christian theocracy it represents ?
Don’t get me wrong I don’t think that every single person who voted Republican is not ‘sane and rational’, but I do think that a lot of those ordinary people (not the super rich) who voted republican voted against their own best interests.
I believe there is a percentage of Trump voters who are not what I would classify as sane and rational, but certainly there must be many Trump voters who are completely sane and rational. So why did these people vote for Trump ?
The first time round in 2016 he shocked the world. But looking back over the campaign with hindsight this time round it was all but inevitable he has been given as he says a powerful mandate, a comprehensive cross demographic coalition. But what I think this proves is that just relying on the vote of city dwelling latte drinking liberal women doesn’t win elections.
One of the Democrats final TV adverts was directed at women and what it essentially said was it’s fine to vote for Kamala just don’t tell your husband, but when you’re relying on women to vote for you don’t patronize them by making out they are all wife battered wall flowers because if you do then you will lose.
I think the Democrats had one of the most lackluster campaigns in history.
If you’re genuinely trying to understand why America would vote for a convicted felon, a fraudster a known liar and adjudicated rapist who paid off a porn star with campaign finances and then lied about it then look towards the Democratic campaign.
Throughout the campaign I’ve been asking what are her policies and the answer from Democrats has invariably been well what are his policies, which is no answer at all. The voters had all the reasons not to vote for one candidate but no reasons to vote for the other.
There was nothing on policies, nothing on immigration no attempt to persuade the electorate that economically America is doing rather well actually thank you very much. Once again the Democrats have absolutely failed to effectively address the concerns of millions of Americans, particularly the millions who voted for Trump before and just voted for him again.
Kamala Harris has completely ignored a genuine grievance these people have. This is that a huge section of America thinks the state is corrupt and wields too much power over normal people’s lives and only serves the rich and the powerful, and they’re not wrong.
Trump didn’t create this belief he just used it, he harnessed it to his own ends but he is the only person talking about these things, he’s voicing concerns that nobody else is talking about and when Donald Trump says he plans to dismantle the Deep State and reclaim democracy from Washington that might sound chilling or perhaps a bit authoritarian but to many normal sane and rational Americans that sounds amazing, taking a flamethrower to governmental institutions is a genuinely attractive offer to millions of Americans.
It’s not about left or right or good versus evil it’s not about MAGA, it’s not about religion or abortion, they just feel POWERLESS, they feel the state doesn’t protect them from injustice it just protects itself and Kamala Harris has completely ignored the issue handing Trump the keys to the White House as well as the Senate and probably the House in the process whilst thinking we’re right and he’s wrong and that’s good enough for us, shame on them.
But the feeling all across America is that at least he’s going to do something about it, at least something will change.
If you’re going to go head-to-head with a man who is willing to lie through his teeth to get elected, who will say anything to get elected then you better have something better to say yourself!
But instead all we got was cozying up on the sofa with Oprah, saying this election is about Joy over Hate it’s about it’s about lifting people up. No it isn’t, it’s about who is going to actually do something, change something, you can’t just run on Sunshine and Lollipops and just not being the other guy, and if she’s not going to do anything meaningful then why vote for her!
People wanted to know what are her policies, how’s she going to help me feed my kids, what’s she going to do about the Border. But no, she doesn’t have to do anything because she’s just been endorsed by Shawn Bean and Orlando Bloom.
No one cares that Trump had Dr Phil and Hulk Hogan and yet he still won, and with the real life Bond villain Elon Musk beavering away on X spreading a flurry of slurry across social media.
With the tax dodging multi-millionaire felon new now running the show in America it is now a fully fledged plutocracy … so, no real change there then!
He will govern largely untrammeled this time, the drainer of swamps the melter of snowflakes has returned to take America back to the good old days of lynchings, mass deportations and coat hanger abortions.
An America where the denial of facts is government policy and where truth takes a backseat in favour of a brash lying narcissist hellbent on Revenge and Chaos.
Many Americans who voted republican did so because of promises of low inflation and help for the working poor.
Actually the president has very little control over inflation unless they do something stupid, like continuing economic stimulus packages beyond the time they’re needed (in Biden’s post-pandemic case) or imposing huge tariffs on imported goods (Trump’s proposals).
Inflation mitigation in the US is largely the purview of the non-political Federal Reserve Board, which tightens and loosens the money supply as needed. This is basic macroeconomic theory, but few voters know the subject or how it works. Whatever the case, inflation is currently about the same as during the previous Trump administration, and Harris — the vice president — had little to nothing to do with Biden’s policies. The vice president’s official duties are to preside over the Senate — that’s pretty much it.
As for tighter southern border security and immigration, yes, the Democrats have done a terrible job managing illegal immigration. For some reason, it just didn’t seem to be a priority for Biden. On the other hand, it’s also a huge problem in Europe, and we are also having difficulty managing the issue. Again, Harris had little to do with Biden’s immigration policies other than being appointed to look into the root causes of migration from Central America.
In my opinion these two issues were determining factors in the election, despite most people having little understanding of either.
So why would America vote for a convicted felon, a fraudster a known liar and adjudicated rapist who paid off a porn star with campaign finances and then lied about it ?
Well people who believe that a convicted felon, narcissist, serial liar, insurrectionist, convicted sex offender, and otherwise fundamentally flawed person should be president are people who have trouble connecting the dots — critical thinking skills and the ins and outs of complicated policies and their ramifications go right over their heads.
In this election, these people were motivated more by their emotions than their intellect. Imagined grievances, scapegoating, name-calling, and simplistic solutions to complicated problems fired up an already angry crowd that felt disenfranchised in a changing world and wanted a return to an imaginary past that never existed. This sort of illogical political thinking happens all the time in South American politics, and it’s notably happened elsewhere with horrific consequences.
So people voted for a lower cost of living and closed borders.
Actually the President (any president) can only take measures to reduce inflation over the long term, but these measures take a long time to reduce inflation. Of course they can do things to increase inflation in the short term, for example by imposing trade tariffs on all imported goods or by deporting millions of migrant farm workers thus making it difficult for farmers to harvest their crops. Either of these two measures will drastically increase inflation in the short term.
In the short term inflation is mainly controlled by three things, the price of commodities on the global markets, the money supply and corporate greed. The president can only control the money supply, the other two factors are not under his control.
When Trump was last in power he benefited from the measures which Obama had introduced which were by that time reducing inflation, but also the world market prices were more stable. That all fell apart in 2020 with the pandemic. So even if Trump had won in 2020 (which he didn’t) there would have been an increase in inflation whoever was in power.
The period 2020 to 2024 has seen major disruptions to global markets, the war in Ukraine forced up oil prices for a time, the blockade of Ukrainian wheat exports by Russia forced up grain prices and the aftermath of the pandemic cut demand but also cut supply by a larger amount. The Biden administration has actually handled these disruptions quite well and inflation in America has been lower than in Europe and many other countries.
So when Trump says that inflation is worse than when he was in power and puts the blame on Biden’s mismanagement he is only partially correct. Yes inflation is worse but this is due to external factors which are not under the administrations control and to then conclude that because of this Biden has mishandled the economy is a deliberate misrepresentation of the truth, inflation would have gone up whoever was in power.
I will let you into a little secret here … politicians don’t always tell the truth.
This time around inflation will do what it would have done anyway unless Trump introduces some of the ridiculous policies he was talking about in the campaign, in which case America will be in for an unpleasant surprise.
Part of the problem in the US is the state public secondary education system (middle and high schools). Few states require basic economics courses and those that do focus on personal finance (microeconomics) instead of how the economy works (macroeconomics).
In every presidential election, the economy is a primary concern of voters. However, most voters know almost nothing about macroeconomic theory and have no idea they don’t know how the economy works. Yet they base their votes on the erroneous assumption that the president somehow controls it.
The president (or any government) can sink the economy into recession or cause inflation to skyrocket through short-sighted or populist programs with economic consequences. However, they can do little to turn the economy around quickly.
In the short term, inflation is mainly controlled by external factors, such as the Ukraine war’s effect on grain prices, OPEC, cheap Asian labor, etc. However, money supply within the economy is more relevant than corporate greed, but it’s more difficult to explain. For example, the government can create money out of thin air and inject it into the economy, but that always has major inflationary consequences. In the West, the primary way money is created is through borrowing.
For example, I might get a new job that allows me to deposit £30,000 into my bank account. I can withdraw that money at any time. However, my neighbour might want a new car, so he goes to the bank for a loan. The bank loans him my £30,000. Even though I still have access to my £30,000, my neighbour also has access to £30,000 that he didn’t have before. In effect, the bank loan injected £30,000 into the economy that didn’t previously exist.
Most countries have a central bank that governs the magical creation of money. In the United States, that task falls to the Federal Reserve Board (often called the Fed), which places various restrictions on how banks loan money. The Fed relaxes or tightens its restrictions to influence the economy’s money supply through these restrictions on banks’ abilities to loan money. I’ll skip the complicated details, but these restrictions affect interest rates, which affects the number of people taking out loans and mortgages.
For example, during inflationary periods in the economic cycle, the Fed will tighten its restrictions on banks, which raises interest rates. Higher interest rates result in fewer loans, which lowers the demand for those items the loans would have purchased. As demand decreases, so do prices and inflation. During recessionary periods, the Fed does the opposite. It eases restrictions on loans, causing interest rates to decrease. Lower interest rates cause more people to take out loans, increase the money supply, enable people to buy more stuff and stimulate the economy.
In the US, the Fed used its ability to increase the money supply during the pandemic, which avoided a major recession. When the pandemic receded, people began spending again, which fueled inflation, so the Fed tightened its restrictions. This caused interest rates to increase and slow the economy, bringing inflation down to normal levels today.
The only thing Biden did that increased inflation was prolong the economic stimulus by sending free money to US citizens after the pandemic was tapering down. However, that wasn’t the only reason for inflation. The worldwide (not just US) post-pandemic inflation was primarily a rebound result of people spending money again after not spending it during the pandemic.
Will Trump’s populist plans help the economy? No! If he implements his proposals, the economy will sink into stagflation. This is when the country simultaneously enters recession while prices increase, limiting the Fed’s ability to control it through regulatory means.
First, if he deports millions of illegal immigrants, there will be a major labor shortage. This will cause some businesses to go bankrupt, while others will raise wages to attract employees. Those businesses will raise their prices to compensate for increased labor costs, triggering another round of inflation. Are tens of millions of illegal migrants a good thing? No, but the economy has adjusted to the cheap labor, and removing that labor pool will cause a tremendous shock to the economy. And I haven’t even mentioned the devastating human costs of disrupting millions of people’s lives.
Second, his tariff proposals will have horrendous short-term effects on the economy. For example, his proposed 60% tariffs on items made in China will increase the cost of all Chinese imports by 60%. Is our trade balance with China already out of whack? Yes, but tariffs won’t fix the problem since sufficient alternative sources for all those products do not exist. These tariffs will cause double-digit inflation while sinking the world economy into a recession. Trump and his supporters seem to think that American companies will compensate for the shortage, but that won’t happen since the necessary manufacturing capacity doesn’t exist in America anymore — Americans have gotten used to buying cheap stuff from China. Instead of that manufacturing capacity returning to America, Chinese companies will begin building factories in places like Vietnam, Indonesia, the Philippines and Thailand and then exporting from there rather than from China.
The only silver lining to Trump’s proposed economic and deportation plans is that he will probably only implement them on a very limited and superficial basis. He’s not that much of an idiot, and he knows perfectly well that these big populist economic and deportation proposals will crash the economy. He cynically exploited the public’s ignorance of economics by proposing things that he knows won’t work but will get votes, which is pretty much the definition of a demagogue.
There is an old Chinese curse :- ‘May you live in interesting times’
I think the times which are ahead for America are going to be pretty damn fascinating. That is not me cursing Americans, they did that to themselves when they voted republican.
