Frequently Asked Questions

Ratings are based on objective seat position characteristics. Green-rated seats have advantages like extra legroom (exit rows, bulkhead), standard or better recline, and good window alignment. Yellow seats are standard with no notable pros or cons. Red-flagged seats have known issues: limited or no recline (last row), proximity to galleys or lavatories, misaligned windows, or reduced under-seat storage.
Exit rows offer significantly more legroom — often 35-40+ inches of pitch compared to the standard 30-32 inches. However, they come with trade-offs: armrests often cannot be raised, tray tables fold out of the armrest (reducing width), seat-back screens may be smaller, and you must be willing and able to assist in an evacuation. Some exit rows also have no window or a misaligned window.
Seats in the last row of each cabin section typically have limited or no recline because they are positioned against a bulkhead, galley wall, or lavatory partition. Similarly, seats immediately in front of an exit row may have restricted recline to keep the exit path clear. Airlines rarely advertise this — checking the seat map before booking is the best way to avoid these seats.
Aircraft fuselages have windows at fixed structural intervals, but seat rows are spaced independently based on pitch. When the seat pitch doesn't match the window spacing, some window seats end up between two windows with only a wall panel beside them. This is most noticeable on aircraft with tight seat pitch (28-30 inches), where window alignment gradually shifts along the cabin.
PlaneFYI currently features 210+ seat maps covering major airline and aircraft combinations. Each map reflects the airline's actual cabin configuration, including seat counts per class, pitch, and layout. New maps are added regularly as airlines update their fleet configurations.

Methodology

Seat maps are constructed from airline configuration data and supplemented with seat-quality assessments based on known cabin layout factors. Seats near emergency exits typically receive positive ratings for extra legroom, while seats in the last row or adjacent to lavatories are flagged for limited recline and potential noise or odor. Window seat misalignment — where the seat position does not align with an actual window — is noted where applicable. Ratings reflect structural characteristics of the seat position, not subjective comfort preferences.
