Yes, gender is a social construct. But that's exactly the thing - it's socially constructed! Genders as social constructs are made by the combined social interactions and negotiations of thousands if not millions of people. If you just sit down by yourself and try to invent a new gender to describe yourself, that's not a gender. That's just a nickname. Social constructs can only be made socially. That's the entire point of a social construct - a bunch of people getting together and coming up with some new label to describe some aspect of the word. Without that social element, you're just writing fanfiction. It's like that wiki of thousands of genders that was recently deleted. Removed Comment My only comment is that as it specifically applies to medical and surgical interventions (which not all trans people want / need anyway) there does need to be a specific bad thing that is being alleviated to justify the risks of treatment under medical ethics. If there's a possibility of a bad side effect, there has to be a possibility of a worse thing for not doing the treatment. For a doctor to provide estrogen or conduct an invasive surgery they have to be able to say well it was worth the risk of causing a blood clot or an infection or whatever else because it alleviated the reduced quality of life / risk of depression etc. Speaking of which ladies please do not use nicotine while on estrogen I've had a couple patients have strokes at shockingly young ages that way. by ethaver @kbin.earth reason: Concern trolling
