Not to be too much of a “knew it” person, but I remember when they first started rumors about how dangerous it was that my bullshit detector started going off, because it felt like they were intentionally trying to make it sound like a threat large enough to get attention, and more importantly funding. I kinda expect it to be adopted, then opsec to complain about it sucking in a couple of weeks to months at a few bigger companies.

Unfortunately, its beginning to be a little more complicated than that, as there are prints that can be generated by AI now. Also, some software that detects print issues is probably using AI based tangle detection (pretty it actually is more AI based than just ML, but if anyone knows better let me know). The irony is that this is becoming a pretty good shit post due to that new difference.
Here you go, even the same manufacturer.

Technology@lemmy.zip•Amazon won’t release Fire Sticks that support sideloading anymoreEnglish
1·7 days agoTrue, but their main value proposition has been for a while that you can jailbreak them and stream pirated content on them, even for your less technical users. Honestly, it seems like Amazon is probably doing this for liability reasons rather than profit, as if profit were the motive, then they could increase the cost of the device due to “inflation”.

World News@lemmy.world•U.S. Intelligence Shows China Taking a More Active Role in Iran WarEnglish
21·12 days agoKind of a no shit moment, as China has a lot to lose from Iran not being able to sell them oil. That being said, it’s gonna be interesting how Trump blockade plays out, as most Asian countries are dependent on the area for their energy needs (maybe even make them more dependent on China overall given it’s renewable tech).
Yep. I just wish there was an option to block most of the videos from specific channels. I’ve had to unsubscribe to some because they kept constantly pushing updates and new videos to the point where it was kinda hard to see other videos (france24 if anyone is interested).

“So then, you take a left on {street you aren’t familiar with, so you’ll forget the name when you get there}, then…”
Nice! Looks good. My only suggestion is maybe try soy curls instead of straight tofu, texture tends to be better. Made those a few times (figured out the recipe from a local Vietnamese bakery), tastes soo good.

World News@lemmy.world•Zelensky says allies asked him to scale back attacks on Russian energyEnglish
13·25 days agoNot particularly, that would absolutely backfire if Zelensky tried that. Most of why the war hasn’t spiralled seems to be that he hasn’t broken any rules of combat, and has decent relationships with most of the countries of the EU. In fact, that would probably give Trump a premise to help Russia, something he has clearly been looking for for a while.
And even then, I think the connotation between Trump and Europe’s Far right is enough to make them generally unpopular, given the far right caused the gas/oil shortages in the first place, so I doubt AfD, Le Pen, or Farage would gain enough leverage to parley that into power.
Ultimately, I think Ukraine needs to quickly shut down Russian oil production, as if they don’t Russia gets a foothold that makes their war last longer. It won’t be particularly popular in a lot of the EU (at least in the short term), but it’s better than giving Russia the means to continue their bullshit.

World News@lemmy.world•Zelensky says allies asked him to scale back attacks on Russian energyEnglish
42·26 days agoOr alternatively, if he doesn’t knock out Russian oil quickly, the US might say, how about we end this war on your behalf as long as you keep the oil flowing. Russia is generally losing currently, but if they get enough funds from oil Ukraine could lose the war (or more likely keep it going much longer).

2·29 days agoI have actually bought an app on the play store once, because I had a gift card. Turns out, they didn’t use the gift card and used my cc on file for Google drive. Had to spend hours sorting that out with automated customer service, never gonna use that again. Their product actually does suck, and a lot of the reason that f-droid doesn’t is that they aren’t charging you to use it.

6·29 days agoThey block unless you’re logged in. It’s very annoying, still have to use reddit occasionally to find some info or something niche (admittedly not as bad as finding something on discord).
Probably, but it seems like a simple enough solution for hot climates for a stop gap before battery adoption.

2·1 month agoPretty much. On a Sony Xperia 1 V and it works great (best phone I’ve ever had). Downside is that the bootlocker for the US version is locked (AT&T thing) so I can’t just put lineageos on it or something, so I’ve been on the lookout for a replacement recently, and the pickings are pretty sparse.
I’m probably gonna have to ride out the stupid Google bullshit for a few months until there is a decent alternative, as the graphene phone from Motorola probably won’t be released this year (and even then it probably won’t have a headphone jack and a micro SD card slot) and pretty much all of the Linux phones available now don’t really meet my needs (also no headphone jack on something like the jolla phone, which as someone used to Linux for years, I know Bluetooth headphones aren’t much of a solid option).

391·1 month agoIt’s the tls certificate that proves your website is legit. Without which, you can potentially be a malicious actor that can pose as the website, and when you download the iso, you could unknowingly download something malicious. It’s pretty hard to forget certificate renewal (most of the time there are plenty of reminders sent and warnings given), so the fact that it happened twice was very impressively bad.

Is it bad that my assumption before seeing the community was that this was some Kash Patel meme?
