There very definitely are some users who clearly post when spiralling and will post a handful of very clearly self-harming posts each month most of which get removed by mods for being buckwild, and maybe one of which from the beginning of the spiral gets left up and then becomes one of these struggle session posts you’re talking about.

In the last 24 hours one of the biggest of these threads can be distilled down to saying “Skiing is white supremacist for only being in places with cold climates”, “snow is racist”, and “sports that do not specifically cater to me and the place I live are inherently bourgeois.” People just blew up a thread about skiing bitching about the gear being expensive in California, imagining that people would make fun of them for using old gear (most people think retro gear is dope), and saying that it’s problematic because it doesn’t exist in [places where snow does not fall]

Half of the threads that are ostensibly about hating white people are posted by a couple of users who mostly post these types of threads very clearly as a form of self harm.

These arguments are not as productive or relevant as you think.

Yeah this thread is wild. It’s a geography/climate tied sport. People are bitching about equipment being so expensive in California? The place famous for not getting much snow?

As this thread has tried to correct against only criticising the concept of traveling for vacations and the environmental factors of ski resorts (which both do suck yes) the criticism of non-alpine skiing has gotten even dumber than when it was just being ignored.

I guess I wish people could learn that not everything is always about them.

Climate definitely doesn’t help. Hard to do snow sports where there is no snow.

Southeast Asia seems to be serious about building up infrastructure for a number of winter sports so maybe in the future that will be less true.

The potential of it causing diplomatic issues with it possibly being a racist meme targeted at Obama was the exact reason it was proactively censored.

Yeah, every criticism I’ve seen in this thread applied exclusively to alpine skiing, and almost exclusively to alpine resorts.

Cross-country is basically just Other Snowshoeing. Brand new gear costs maybe a couple hundred bucks, used gear is perfectly functional and ubiquitous (at least here in Canada) and the only infrastructure or anything that needs to exist is just snow having fallen.

I’ve been sort of enjoying Hexicon, a hexagonal word search game. It’s fun, my only gripe is that I don’t have enough people to play with.

Also gotta recommend Smash Hit, it’s a couple bucks to unlock the “pro” features and it’s the only game that’s survived multiple phone switches. I’ve been playing this game for a decade and it’s still fun to play for a bit every few weeks when I’m stuck waiting somewhere for a bit without a book handy.
