  • People are often down on the value of elephants on the battlefield but they have so many uses beyond a risky charge.

Just having a mobile viewing platform was useful. They could functional a bit like mobile artillery as well. Hellenistic armies were sophisicated combined-arms affairs, so i think we have to presume they gave militaries options they wanted.

People also forget how incredible elephahts are for logistics & engineering - huge in helenistic warfare. Elephants move trees like nothing else could. Imagine today if only one side in a war had industrial earthmoving equipment.

  • Oh well that’s younger than i expected as an early millenial, but i think of “puter” as a term from that cross-generational group i’ve heard described as “analogue childhood digital adolescence”. If you were also watching vhs as a kid it sounds like that includes you.

Do you remember, IRC, the sweet song of the modem and the pain of a parent picking up the phone while you were online? That’s what i think of when i hear Puter.

  • Lol the gizmodo article about the preview of mythos has this incredible openly line:

If Anthropic is kind of like a kid at a Halloween party with a bowl full of spaghetti, telling its blindfolded friends the spaghetti is brains, European cyber agency leaders are like kids who are mad that they still haven’t gotten to stick their fingers in the brain bowl

Anthropic in particular seems to use “we’re scared of what we can do” as their marketing strategy. So maybe this unauthorized use is real, or maybe it’s just more PR.

Seasons 3-8 are generally considered “golden age” simpsons. Theres a lull for a few seasons where it gets very patchy, then it kinda enters a long silver age where episodes are fairly consistently good, with few poor ones and even fewer universally agreed upon greats.

Many fans completely ignore 9+. Others argue where sliver age begins.

The ratings only show the golden age and then slowly declining popularity, because popularity is only ever a loose proxy for quality.
