No Stupid Questions@lemmy.world•How are lemmy and other fediverse platforms profitable?
1·3 years ago@sab What streaming services do you pay for? I’m all for supporting small indie studios, but Disney and the like can deal with me pirating their content.
@Tibert What does this have to do with Google? Isn’t this Facebook?

Shower Thoughts@kbin.social•Since Kbin is new basically anyone here now would be considered veterans in a few years.

Fediverse@lemmy.world•3 days until reddit's 3rd party app shutdown, Lemmy users drive 985% surge with 5.7 million daily comments this month
1·3 years ago@Hank It’s just a nice thing in text based communication in general, as there are no tone or body cues to indicate sarcasm.

Moving to: m/AskMbin!@kbin.social•Why is no one decorating their magazines?
7·3 years ago@Saturdaycat That’s only available from 18 years old+ (you have to give google your age/credit card data) and is otherwise tracked by Google. Is not so much better than the comparatively unrestricted Bing Chat

Chat@beehaw.org•non-stickied PSA: Beehaw has signed the Anti-Meta Fedi Pact
3·3 years ago@alyaza I am conflicted on this. While I feel like it’s probably the right thing to do as Meta would just destroy the fediverse if it entered it, it makes me uncomfortable that this network that is supposed to be so open and connected with each other can be so easily and glibly made into what is essentially yet another privately controlled website.

Technology@lemmy.world•American TikTok user data stored in China, video app admits
10·3 years ago@L4s I thought everyone knew Tiktok was a Chinese data harvesting company
@theatremaker This should go to the boneappletea instance/community

JackGreenEarth@kbin.socialtomicrothoughts@lemmy.world•Anyone else feels that they're more active on Lemmy than they were on Reddit?
2·3 years ago@zephyr There’s definitely a bias to the people more active who will comment here, but I feel I’m less active, which is a good thing, as Lemmy is less addictive.
@IHangBananas I am pro free speech, and I would consider myself mainly left wing. But I resonate with the quote ‘I may not agree with what you have to say, but I will defend to the death your right to say it.’ People have a right to read what they want, and they can block people for themselves to do that, but I think platforms have a moral, if not legal, obligation to host content regardless of whether they agree with it.

@tal Or it could make an API call to a server, the way ChatGPT does today. Unfortunately, that will mean the player has to be online to use the text generation, but the tech of it isn’t what we’re discussing anyway. We’re talking about the ethics of it, not the means.
It’s like we’re talking about whether robbing a bank is OK or not, and then someone goes and talks about how hard it is to rob a bank. It’s a non sequiter, it’s not what we’re talking about.
