You do realize they had a 70 year journey at worst while at constant warp directly headed towards earth. At that point, your whole life is is just one direction max travel. You would want to enjoy your life, why wouldn’t you be doing recreational things at this point. Given the circumstances, would you want to work till the day you die with almost no chance of getting back alive or live your life to the fullest while making the best of a life long bad situation? Kind of a no brainer.
