Anyone who’s spent time in any institution will tell you that corruption is a cancer, whether it’s just saying “good enough” on shoddy work that’ll barely hold together, or deciding “close enough” when arranging security for a formal dinner of political figures and journalists. If you don’t cut it out, it becomes part of the culture and nobody thinks twice.

Trump didn’t go to the dinner over multiple years purely because a lot of reporters use it to poke fun (in good fun) at the President, and occasionally actually lobby for something too. The man cannot take being made fun of, at all. Making it a Presidential event makes sure that he can exclude anybody that’s not the most sycophantic.

Not just “giving up”, there are large portions who think McCarthy’s mistake was not simply murdering everyone who appeared before HUAC. My own father-in-law doesn’t really want these to be any form of actual “we wanna know what’s going on” trials, he just wants this to be all but a summary execution.
