No Stupid Questions@lemmy.world•Not being culturalist but are Koreans overtly kind? Story inside.English
2·6 days agoWell, neighbours are usually much more trustworthy than some strangers. Everyone gets told to not eat whatever strangers give you here too. Maybe it’s weird that neighbours are simply trusted, but I prefer that over being unnecessarily cautious.

2·6 days agoSharing food if you got too much with your neighbour is a thing just like many other countries. We occasionally receive some food like that from people living in other floors in the same building. I’d see it as an extension of it, though inviting people is definitely much less common.

1132·7 days agoRust output is bad? I feel like it’s one of the best in terms of telling you where you got things wrong. Nix output when you accidentally get infinite recursion is so bad.
Come to think of it, Nix fits all three better than Rust.

Linux@lemmy.world•(Rant) Linux really needs to do a better job with package management...English
4·9 days agoYeah, it’s annoying. There’s so many standards and repos, so devs end up with that gigantic version chart showing the version of their program in each repo.
Reminds me of Torvald’s talk about application packaging years ago. Still relevant.

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•Okay if you use a password manager, don't you still have to remember your phone lockscreen and also computer passwords? How do you make this password thing as simple as possible?English
1·14 days agoI noticed it like last week, but it’s been a while since I visited XKCD back then. Probably recent.

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•Do you shower facing the shower or away from it?English
3·14 days agoFacing, but I use handheld one so I can point it anywhere I want. I was surprised this wasn’t common in UK even though it’s fully compatible.

5·16 days agoThat’s fine as long as you’re okay with typing it in every now and then. I would find it tedious to be honest. Past a certain point, additional security is meaningless.

14·16 days agoYou should not use lockscreen password as your master password. Chances are, your lockscreen password is much simpler than your master password. Reason why you can get away with it is because your mobile devices usually have some form of well-integrated isolated environment that can throttle brute force attacks. Your password managers probably cache your vault offline, which may be vulnerable to brute force attacks unless it utilises TPM in some way. Same goes for FDE. Online vaults probably have some sort of rate limiting so that isn’t much of an issue.
One thing I strongly recommend is being realistic with your goal. Current scheme seems a bit too paranoid.

Open Source@lemmy.ml•How do I open source an Android app?English
19·24 days agoYou should check out .gitignore templates and .gitignore file in other open source Android apps to see what needs to be published, what doesn’t need to be published, and most importantly what you should not publish. You should get a couple of results when you search “gitignore android studio”.
