No Stupid Questions@lemmy.world•Why is society at large okay with euthanasia for pets but not for humans?English
143·5 days agoTo add to the comments; many people and laws still view animals as objects, to do with as one pleases. I still hear americans -i’m from europe- talking about animals as ‘it’.
Edit; typo

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•Do people get progressively less happy as they age?English
10·15 days agoThe older i got, the happier i became. Despite physical aches and decline. Mentally, i’m much stronger now. And i don’t care should people not really like me, or have whatever opinions about me. Also, being kind to others makes you happier.
Yes, i see them frequently. Planes often have blinking lights and fly lower. And shooting stars are already gone in the blink of an eye. Also, i have an app -Stellarium - that, if in doubt, shows whether they’re satellites.
Probably nine or so. I go to bed early and get up reasonably early too. As a morning person, and with chronic pain, this seems to work for me.

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•What is that one software that you are using for 10 years and still loving it?English
2·19 days agoPapyrus on my android. It’s not even in the playstore anymore, but i keep -and backup- apk’s. It’s just the simplest notes app, without any markup. It saves as simple text files.
I just open it, jot something down, and leave it. Saves automatically. It might be way more than 10 years even, 15 plus years?

1·19 days agoI know that dogs sometimes get flea drops, which gets in their blood and hence makes their fur poisonous for chicks. I hope horses don’t take medications that can remain in their fur?
Not funky, but interesting articles, also for non-sciency people
That’s interesting, thanks for sharing!
Yes, according to vets and avian specialists, they pose a significant danger for birds. Personally, i wouldn’t risk it. Birds are very sensitive to polluted air, way more than humans are.
However, if you have pet birds and you would light a scented candle, or burn a non stick pot, these poisonous substances will affect them so much harder than for humans, often with deadly consequences
I do love the apt ‘rich beyond conscience’, whoever wrote the quote

He was one of the first writers that imho was able to create truly alien species and really bring them to life. I’ve read and watched SF for decades and almost always the aliens were like humans in a humanoid body, with human emotions and desires. But the spiders and the octopus species were truly alien, while he was able to create them as wonderful species in their own right.
So far i’ve only read the first two ‘Children of…’

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•What book did you read last and what book are you currently reading? Would you recommend either of those books?English
5·9 months agoLast book: Children of ruin. I didnt really like this one, while i was in awe of the brilliance of Children of time.
Currently reading a non-fiction book called The genius of birds. I already knew from direct experience how smart birds are, including ones that people perceive as dumb, like pigeons. But this book really gives a different perspective in how birds are complex creatures that adapt to their environments in intelligent ways, and how other birds will instantly copy these novel ways.
