I’d it really depends on if you own a house that does not share any wall with any neighbors or if you rent an apartment. If you own a house, an acoustic drum may be feasible. Otherwise, having an electronic drum set is the only realistic scenario in which you can practice drums regularly. I had to drive to a secluded rehearsal space, pay rent and deal with the other people and their time schedule just to practice a bit. I wanted to practice every day, but I couldn’t. And it sucked. I’d say it’s better to practice a lot with a slightly altered feel from a real kit than to practice much less with a better feel. Also, edrum sets have improved a lot over the years.

8·2 months agoI totally agree. I’m not an AI hype man. I want to scream whenever I see a PR littered with emojis, bullet lists, and way too much text for a simple change. I hate the discussions about the transformative power of AI, the 10x production gains, all the million tools, agents, skills, plugins, methods I should be using but I am already behind and old and probably unemployed next week, right? Still, AI use is not inherently bad. It gets me unstuck. It finds subtle errors I wasn’t noticing, it writes documentation faster and better than I can. I hate the companies who are pushing it, the methods of it’s training, but the tool itself is just a tool and sometimes a very useful one. IMHO we shouldn’t shame every open source developer just for using it. As long as they are responsible with it, I’m fine with some AI code in my software.

Showerthoughts@lemmy.world•We need libraries, but instead of books, you borrow musical instruments.
13·3 months agoI like the idea, however there are some differencea between books and musical instruments. Hygiene is a problem with all woodwind instruments. Strings, sticks, cymbals, cables brake and need to be replaced regularly. Also a whole ass drumset is huge compared to a book. But there are rehearsal rooms that you can rent that also rent out instruments. It is expensive though.
So Olten is the Kassel of Switzerland. Got it. And living in Bern I’ve heard about the notion that they speak slowly. I cannot confirm. Tschugger without subtitles is impossible though. And Germans are so loud and often rude in a very particular way that I only noticed after I’ve moved here. Thanks for the insight!
So off topic, but what did Olten do? Help me integrate by dissing the right cities.
Three of those are obvious. Just learned about Glencore. But why Olten? Afaik that’s just a city?
Come on! I just moved to Switzerland! I thought it was some wholesome swiss company. What else do I need to avoid?
What did I miss about Läderach?

Lemmy Shitpost@lemmy.world•But think of the landlords!
13·3 months agoStayed in an probably illegal Airbnb in a Samsung apartment in Jeju 10 years ago. It was nice. Apartment complexes are not bad. We have to them in beautiful Switzerland too. If the building is well maintained and the surrounding is full of greenery, and local shops, and entertainment, then they are a valid option and I’d prefer them over sprawl and cul-de-sacs.

Hey there, before I was dad, I also was a drummer and I know that a bad knee really sucks. The way I see it you have at least two choices here: Look for a profession that is not so depend on your body being in perfect shape at all times. That’s what I did. Or you can focus on rudiments, playing with your other foot (with a double bass pedal), switch to a softer style of playing or a different genre. Don’t power through the pain! Be gentle with yourself.

11·4 months agoI seem to have missed it in the north east and central Germany. Then again, I don’t think I ever heard someone say something other than “Ich habe meine Tage” except for some creepy dudes with skeleton T-Shirts talking about being brave seamen that don’t fear the red sea. Which I always found kinda icky.

Well, of course we need to preserve these 2510 gold coins for future generations!

I am so with you on this one. I have come around to a lot of songs, I can tolerate some real vile shit, I can be amused by absolute garbage, but this song goes against every fiber of my being. It’s like a cheese grater to my brain. And I don’t know why.
