Linux Gaming@lemmy.world•Ubuntu 26.04 Will Be the Worst Ubuntu Release EverEnglish
3·15 days agoI had the same way of thinking you do when I switched. I eventually landed on LMDE (Linux Mint Debian Edition) because it just worked. Debian itself was too old to do some gaming stuff I wanted and Arch is too bleeding edge for my taste and amount of free time I have to throw at it.
LMDE gives you the rock solid experience with just enough updates to have an easy time with updates or occasional tinkering

Patient Gamers@sh.itjust.works•Weekly Recommendations Thread: What are you playing this week?
4·20 days agoI just started Kigdom Rush: Vengeance, the fourth game in the series. I really enjoyed 1 and 2; 3 was ok, and I’m enjoying 4 so far. I like that you can mix and match towers in this one. So far the sand worm is my favorite tower.
Overall I still like Kingdom Rush Frontiers (second one) the best, as the balancing was really well done and I absolutely loved the pirate/beach part. I also really like the necromancer tower and having an army of skeleton minions

Privacy@lemmy.world•What's the worst privacy compromise that you are willing to admit you make?English
2·21 days agoI kinda have a niche/weird view on keyboards; I use the default aosp keyboard firewalled for no internet access and with spell check turned off. I find it annoying when it changes what I say, and if Idk how to spell something I look it up and try to remember it for next time. I have typos here and there but mostly I don’t mind and I feel it makes me more deliberate in my use of language.
There are also plenty of open source and generally privacy-respecting keyboards on FDroid like Urik keyboard, so no compromise is needed imo

2·21 days agoHeres a little list of things that matter to me personally. I’m sure others would have similar takes.
Medical Practitioners:
Privacy I’d part with: Everything, begrudgingly
Reason: it’s better than dyingJob Sites:
Privacy I’d part with: gov docs, job history, financial history, identity
Reason: Having a stable income is worth giving up a little more privacy than usual. I would never give them computer usage info or biometrics, but having income to eat, have shelter, and help others is important.Youtube:
Privacy I’d part with: usage data, contact info.
Reason: I do use frontends like invidious and grayjay to get around using the site itself, but I fear one day there won’t be any working alternatives seeing how Google is cracking down so hard. Peertube is great too, but most of my favorite content creators don’t use it. It’s also one of my main sources of entertainment and also knowledge like cooking tutorials, building, woodworking etc.Google Maps:
Privacy I’d part with: usage data, contact info, maybe even location if I’m traveling.
Reason: I use Organic Maps for navigation, but google maps has far superior information on local business, reviews, pictures, etc. Nothing else like it and probably never will be realistically. I use it via sandboxed browser, and to find cool places to travel to and eat.Discord:
Privacy I’d part with: contact info (and that’s it). They can pry my ID from my cold dead hands.
Reason: My friends litteraly refuse to use anything else 🤷♀️Windows 10/Easy AntiCheat:
Privacy I’d part with: kernel level access for non-important device
Reason: Certain games are allergic to linux so I still keep windows around and begrudgingly allow kernel level anticheat. These specific games make me happy and are good for my mental health, which offers more than having one out of my many devices secured. I can just use other locked down devices if I need to do more important stuff. I would also never install Windows 11, that’s a hard line for me.Aside from these, I’ve essentially FOSSified all of my other apps/devices successfully.
TLDR: I would sacrifice elements of my privacy for:
Happiness/Mental Health
Friends/Family
Medical /not dying
A job
Knowledge/Entertainment
The West: sorry I’d rather use a food shovel 🥄

Steam Hardware@sopuli.xyz•Steam is adding support to show estimated FPS for your hardware before buying a game
7·22 days agoLowest I can go is 20fps, anything below is too nauseating. I learned to cope because I modded Skyrim to the point of no return, and I could only get max 20fps with a decent rig and a ton of optimising. Hair physics and 4k trees definitely worth it 👍

Cooking @lemmy.world•(Question) what should I do with this? Any ideas? (Preferably vegetarian suggestions if possible)
3·25 days agoMushroom Truffle pasta or risotto is really good. It also pairs well with musty cheeses like aged asiago or aged goat cheese

Privacy•GrapheneOS Foundation Discusses History Of Phoney Privacy Companies Targeting The Project
3·1 month agoThis is interesting to observe. Quite a while ago I caught a lot of hate for discussing CalyxOS, now Graphene is getting flak. Both are great, it’s strange that there’s so much drama over good software, especially considering the lack of alternatives in mobile OSes.

Privacy@lemmy.dbzer0.com•Surge in Systemd forks after the latest changes
3·1 month agoI can definitely see both sides. On one hand I do agree the actual change itself is pretty meaningless. Just don’t fill the systemdb entries with any info. However what the change represents is much more alarming. It signals a foot in the door to open source devs conplying to the authoritarian whims of a governmental power. They should definitely not comply with dumb legeslature like this, especially considering their userbase.
TLDR: the change itself is dumb and small, but what it means for the foss community is much more alarming and dangerous.

2·1 month agoHonestly I’ve more been looking forward to Skywind than I have ES6.
I still have hope anyway. Even if the game sucks, if the worldbuilding is good, that’s why I love Elder Scrolls and I would play it for that.
These are my favorites from each category:
Classic: The Odyssey, Homer
Fantasy: Here There be Dragons, James Owen
Horror: The Fall of House Usher, E.A. Poe (short story)
SciFi: Fahrenheit 451, Ray Bradbury
Science: Cosmic Querries, Neil deGrasse Tyson
Politics: A Second Treatise of Government, John Locke
Philosophy: Phaedo, Plato
Poetry: Songs of Innocence and Experience, William Blake
Play: A Midsummer Night’s Dream, Shakespeare
Historical Fiction: Little House on the Prarie, Laura Ingals Wilder
Cooking: The Classic of Tea, Lu Yu
Religion: The Screwtape Letters, C.S. Lewis
Romance: idk havent read one I like yet

371·1 month agoIn my own experience, it’s less that they spew out politics and more that they are just so defensive and argumentative. A lot of good lemmy communities are based on discussion and sharing cool stuff, while the denizens of those instances and the like are more online to debate, nitpick, and criticize. Like there could be a post of a dog picture and their comment would be critisizing the owner or introducing some political argument that is distantly related. Like bro, just enjoy the dog picture

2·2 months agoWith wine you just need to know what winetricks to use, e.g. like if a game needs dotnet 4.0 or another windows runtime/prerequisite. Winehq has a similar premise with different compatabiltiy ratings and steps others have taken to troubleshoot. You wont get installer scripts but you will get good directions most of the time. Any game rated platinum or gold is a breeze to set up

3 is totally underrated, and my favorite. Everyone hated the future shooters back then but I loved it and it still had a strong playerbase despite that.
I played BO 1, 2, and then 3 and never moved on after 3. I still boot it up occasionally and if the moons align I can find a server
