That’s why answering machings had speakers on them. It was a great way to screen calls. If someone you wanted to talk to was on the line you just picked up.

As a schoolteacher my wife has perfected the look. It works on kids, other teachers, admin, bus drivers, and even gang affiliated parents. Apparently it’s terrifying to most people.
The only person it doesn’t work on is me.
What’s fun is when she occasionally attempts to narrate it.
Her “I am glaring at you!”
Me “Oh I see your “come hither” looks, they are quite sexy.”
Her “You are impossible!”
Me “Darl’n control yourself, we are in public.”

Dull Men's Club@lemmy.world•I put down some spot treatment on my front lawn yesterday
17·2 days agoIt looks to be a common deep shade issue. Even the weeds are stressing out.
Test the soil pH. Underneath large trees the soil often acidifies and adding in some lime will help.
The main solution is to pick the correct species that will work in the location. Skip the bluegrass, ryegrass, tall fescue, hard fescue or sheep fescueetc and look for festuca rebrum and it’s subspecies (creeping red fescue, chewing fescue, etc).
You’ll also want to overseed this fall at a rate of 7-10lbs of seed to/1000 sq feet. Not that piddly little bit that you did there. It’s not enough seed to do shit.
That’s a no.
Also the fire suppression systems usually dump gases like nitrogen, argon, CO2 etc toreduce the O2 percentage in a room. They also don’t work as well with a venting hole. A mask with a small O2 container like they use for climbing is recommended.
The new ones for AI etc. are nowhere near a bank level security.
Pretty easy to knock a hole in a concrete slab wall and have full access to the goods if somebody wanted too.

Ukraine@sopuli.xyz•Belgium to deliver 15 Gepard anti-aircraft guns to Ukraine in new €1 Billion aid plan
3·4 days agoHad to look up their magazine size: 350 rounds is what they carry according to Wikipedia. Doesn’t sound like a lot but it’s a large exploding shell and the system has a high level of accuracy. I remember early on there was a report it was downing a drone in 5-7 rounds. So one maganize can neutralize around 50 drones or more. They can also intercept cruise missiles.
These are ideal for the protection of critical objectives as a last line of defense. Every one of them they get is a big addition.

It does very well grown hydroponically. The easiest way to re-pot this plant is to take cuttings and put them into a jar or vase of water. I usually add a feeding of fertilizer into the water as well. Put it on a windowsill that doesn’t get much direct sunlight and wait a month. Top off the water as needed. You can them plant the rooted cuttings into a new pot and soil.
I got brother color a laser printer a little over a year ago. My wife is a teacher and prints around 4 cases a year. I got it because it has a duplex scanner (both sides of the paper in one pass) for my business. It’s awesome for invoices etc.
So far it’s worked very well. It complains a bit when I put the non-OEM toner cartridges into it but it works.
In the grand scheme of things given how much we use it, it’s pretty cheap.

Progressive Politics@lemmy.world•‘It’s All About Keeping Wages at Poverty Levels to Overpay Their CEOs’:
2·5 days agoIt’s a good idea but it’s missing the mark.
The taxes need to be on the CEO compensation not the company. The executive teams with huge paychecks really don’t give a fuck about the company. Look at all the CEO’s who accept huge payouts when the company is going bankrupt and they are laying off employees.
It also needs to be based on total compensation, not just the paycheck for everyone. Otherwise companies will start to offer higher pay, but drop benefits like the greedy little fucks they are.
It also needs to be extended to upper/middle management. In most companies 99% of the decisions are made by the level below the executive team. These are the collection of relatives, kiss-asses and a scattering of qualified individuals who hope to eventually make it to the C-suite.
Let’s correct that little statement.
"Record high beef prices due to an orange dumbfucks trade war with everyone. "
Historically when prices spike the U.S. herd size is sold down quickly to capitalize on the higher prices. When the international producers see the prices start to climb, they build up their herds and flood the market a year or two later exporting into the U.S driving down the prices. Everyone who raises beef knows to sell down hard when prices spike to capitalize on the money when they can. Usually these leaks only last around 18 months.
Guess what happens when a trading partner starts to play stupid games? The traditional suppliers kept their herd sizes stable to limit economic risk due to uncertainty.
To make the issue more severe. Beef producers (cow/calf operations) traditionally have multiple revenue streams, cattle and some crops (usually hay). Hay, corn, soy etc are all dependent on export business. Guess what fucking with trading partners does? It’s cratered the price of all of these crops. End result, they sell more cattle to make ends meet further decreasing the herd size.

371·6 days agoThis is has always been the glaring issue with pure democracies.
That’s why constitutional republics were created. It’s supposed to be a counter to the negative side of democracy. The constitution is supposed to be continuously updated and refined with the changing needs of the Republic.
FYI the last constitutional amendment to the U.S. was in 1992. That is 34 years ago. Unless something changes radically in the next few years, historians will refer to that date as when the U.S. Constitution died.
What skin? There were so many thousands I swapped out every week or two just for fun.
Winamp + limewire = it was an awesome combination. I burned most of them to CD’d so I could take them to work with me.
Now everything I burned back then fits on the USB drive in my backpack.
I spent way to many years traveling to France for business and spending several weeks there at a time. I don’t speak French of course as I studied a bit of Spanish. When there as a foreigner you generally get either pleasant and wonderful people or snobbish assholes.
Parisians lean more towards assholes though I met many wonderful people there. It’s more of a disdainful bored attitude without much bite. They know tourism is necessary for their jobs but dealing with tourism is a pain the ass. This interaction pretty much sums it up.
When you are outside of Paris the reactions get more extreme. I got some of the best and worst reactions when I was in smaller cities like Nantes or Lyon.

Ukraine@sopuli.xyz•Ukrainian electronic warfare system Lima has downed 26 Kinzhal missiles since start of year – video
2·6 days agoOn my trip to Ukraine before Russia invaded Crimea I noticed some things.
I was visiting farmers who are globally known to make interesting modifications and constructions. I have been to many countries all around the world and have seen all sorts of home-made weird shit. Ukraine took it a step further.
Most regions have a few inventors who create something that works and everyone else in a region copies it. Equipment manufacturers then steal the ideas and make a shiner “improved” version if there is enough interest.
In Ukraine, everywhere I looked was a home-made invention. It was similar in type to stuff I see all over the world, just a shit-ton more of it.
It’s not smarts alone, lots of countries have very intelligent people. Ukraine has a culture promoting applied innovation. Under the stresses of war, we’ve seen this cultural trait tempered and focused.

Yep, that will fill in some of the losses from the damage Ukraine is doing to their oil export. I think the people in charge of Russia’s air-defense network might need to avoid tall buildings and windows for the foreseeable future.

Gardening@lemmy.world•Gardeners who start from seeds, do you use seed starting mix or go straight to potting mix?English
10·6 days agoSorry you about made me spit out my coffee.
Beans, zinnas and sunflowers are some of the less picky species for substrate. Both sunflowers and beens have large seeds and enough stored energy to supply the plant to the second true leaf. Zinnia’s have extremely durable and high germinating seeds. For testing seedling mixes they are a poor choice. Mainly because they will do well in most things.
There is no “correct” seedling mix for everything. Every species has its own optimal growth medium based upon its unique needs.
What works well for tomatoes is too fine for squash. What works for cantaloupes holds too much water for watermelons. Then there is the whole slow germinating flower seeds. That’s a mess of different preferences.

How old and large is the plant?
The first few years as the plant mass grows you don’t want to prune anything.
Once the plant is established, cutting the early vines helps with increasing and concentrating yield. Commercially the spray a dissicant on the early growth to knock them back.

#1- Have your Vitamin D levels checked with some blood work
https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC8912284/
It’s the most common underlying cause of sleep issues. I work outside in the sun regularly. I still came up Vit D deficient.
#2 - Have your Doctor check for other underlying sleep issues. There are many and they can be very dangerous to your health.
Then do all the others.
