Sorry but I just don’t agree that pre-emptive defederation is the right play here. Even with reddit, we still do outreach and try to remind people lemmy exists and that they should move. I think it’s better to keep federated and continue agitating for people and communities to migrate away.
I mean, as much as I like to pile on PTBs, they’re only driving their own users away from their instance. A defederation because their admins keep abusing their power isn’t sufficient imho, because they can’t do anything significant. I feel like defederation should be reserved for cases where their userbase behaviour is overall harmful, such as bigotry, or speech which would drive away marginalized people from our instance to avoid seeing it. Having one of their mods degrade their own instance trust, doesn’t do that and if anything would prevent their users from seeing our agitations.
That’s my take on this.

Joking aside, I don’t consider pensions “passive income” as I’ve been actually paying money all my working life. I do consider the whole pension system a joke and a scam most of the time and it can actually be exploitative, but at least those in it typically have to be productivity most of their lives. But ultimately the pension system should also be scrapped and replaced by a straight up social net funded by the state, if we’re talking about staying in capitalism.

My point is, even a racist bridge has uses as a bridge. The solution is not to tear down the bridge, it’s to address the systematic racism. Likewise with GenAI tech, we are not involved in making it, nor do we promote that the way it was created was correct. We just say that people using it are not necessarily reinforcing the problem, anymore than a random pedestrian crossing that bridge would be reinforcing racism.
Yes, the way the tech was created and is being used, is problematic; an imperfect creation of a deeply flawed system. I’m not disputing that. I’m disputing that any and all uses of an imperfect creation are by necessity “fascist”
I feel the author routinelly conflates technology with technological implementations to make their point. For example, they conflate surveillance, with camera equipment and they conflate bridges, with city planning. What me and others are pointing out, is that we’re not hostile to GenAI as the technology (like cameras, bridges) but we’re absolutely against the popular (i.e. corporate) GenAI implementations.
I feel there’s no harm whatsoever to use GenAI to personal gratification. Games, Porn, Shortcuts on boring but known tasks etc. But there’s absolutely harm to using corporate AI to do so, and there’s absolutely harm in using it for purposes outside of it (facts, propaganda, agents etc)
And yes, any technology built in capitalist systems, will be inevitably corrupted from its inception from those systems. This is not exclusive to GenAI as a technology however.

I’m not certain that’s true anymore. The early times of the rexxodus were something else. Most of the people doing outreach are not suggesting L.W anymore and power users like blaze are constantly agitating to move comms away. Plus the fact that the mod team of l.w. is rapidly losing quality and trust is also pushing more and more people away. I just don’t think L.W. hoovers everyone anymore. The paradigm has changed. In fact lemmy as a whole is not gaining as many users as piefed.
And if that were true and people defaulted to l.w. right now, defederating would be even worse, as these wouldn’t even know we exist.
