Because he, like all major national leadership, refuses to engage with the true cause of unaffordability: unwillingness to tax and regulate the rich.
I’m a Jellyfin Server Guy, and same deal. Around a dozen friends & fam, no charge.
I’m not sure why needing transcoding would keep you off Jellyfin though, Jellyfin transcodes just fine.

We have them. The bike route I take to work in Vancouver has a concrete barrier, but it doesn’t stop ebike riders from silently sneaking up and nearly knocking me off my bike, and it doesn’t stop the uber eats guys driving on the sidewalk to their pickup locations. I agree infrastructure is important, but the enforcement for public safety is severely lacking.

This politician is a jackass, but I do wish there was a bit more bylaw enforcement being directed at e-bikes and scooters. I can’t count the times I’ve almost been smoked by one on the goddamn sidewalk, or been sideswiped by what is essentially a silent motorcycle in a bicycle lane. Especially dangerous when they’re so favored by delivery app couriers who are also incentivized to rush at high speeds.

Or alternatively, that clever, funny, smart people are not always immune to propaganda and radicalization

Hmm. I pay for letterboxd pro because I like stats and watch a ton of movies. I pay a yearly fee to porkbun for my domain name. I pay Kagi for search because it’s so much better than the free alternatives. I pay a couple usenet providers, and a few sponsorships on github, but that’s about it.

Because we refuse to tax rich people

I haven’t been to a movie in a theater in years, but the horrible little cineplex-owned theater down the block from me was recently purchased by a local rep theater, and their opening week lineup is kind of insane, so I might come out of retirement to see Wings of Desire, In the Mood for Love, Ikiru, or Paris Texas somewhere that’s a 2-minute walk from my house.

And if you DON’T have a steam deck but have a decent smartphone, a razer kishi or similar provides a great comparable budget setup. I use moonlight and a Kishi 2 with my Pixel 6 and it’s a great couch/bed experience over wifi.

When a government musters up the guts to do their job and regulate corporations
I mean, if you’re paying for something anyway, Navidrome + Symfonium is (to me) a better option.

This is what Canada’s all about. We’re just 3 corporations in a trench coat, pretending to be a country.

Honestly, my phone does a great job playing most retro games, and for a controller I have a razor Kishi 2 and it’s perfect for that application

I think there’s only a small handful of leftists in American politics at all, and that their propaganda apparatus would be small, if it exists at all. Maybe centrist, neoliberal propaganda, but leftist? Where?

Last year’s Sister Midnight was excellent, had some fun Wes Anderson vibes

Oh nooooo a show might have female protagonists instead of being a straight adaptation of a movie that already exists

Reanimator is a lot of fun (though I personally prefer From Beyond if we’re gonna talk Stuart Gordon stuff).
Italian horror is my personal favorite, but don’t go in expecting things to make sense. They tend to operate on dream logic.

Anything Cronenberg did in that era… Scanners, Videodrome, The Fly, (though my personal faves are his 90s/00s output). Anything Argento did in the 80s (Inferno, Phenomena, Opera), etc. Speaking of Italians, my boy Lucio Fulci made some great ones in that decade too, notably The Beyond, The House By The Cemetery, and The Black Cat. Carpenter’s 80s stuff should go without saying (The Fog, Prince of Darkness, They Live, The Thing). Craven’s Nightmare on Elm Street is pretty perfect too.
Maybe I’d vote for Andrej Zulawski’s Possession, which is fucking nuts. Or a personal deep-cut fave like Night of the Comet. Does Blue Velvet count as horror? Does Ken Russell’s Gothic?
Can’t go wrong with an arc a310
