I think you are using the terms in a colloquial sense whereas i am using a technical sense.

In my view the distinction between a cable and a wire is one of construction, not what it’s carrying.

Wire = a continuous length of conductor electrically connecting one thing to another

Cable = one or more wires, with electrical insulation between them, generally enclosed in an outer jacket suitable for end user handling. It could be transmitting usb data or 32kW at 800V and still be a cable.

Not all cables carry data.

Data is encoded physically by the modulation of electrical characteristics (voltage, frequency, current, phase), which is effected by the motion of electrical charge, which is what we call…current.

In the US, in states that charge sales tax, the merchant is generally supposed to charge sales tax. And if they don’t, the purchaser is generally supposed to pay a “use tax” that is the same amount as what the sales tax would have been.

The latter pretty much never happens though, because there isn’t the tax infrastructure to do that for individuals.

But at a glance, the article talks about Section 24220 of the “BIL” which does indeed talk about in-cabin monitoring. I wish I could find the actual section of the law on my phone, but this letter from NHTSA talks about it.

But the articles links seem to be about something completely different.

Sloppy AF, yes, and in that sense the article is bullshit. But the thing it’s warning about does seem to exist.
