Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•Is there a reason why the piracy scene here is so dead?English
2·7 days agoI’m not sure about a torrent but that link is to it hosted in plaintext with a bunch of download options on https://theanarchistlibrary.org/
that’s really funny though, id imagine it’s a delicious satisfaction telling an ISP (or whoever else?) to respectfully shove it

3·9 days agoit only really clicked for me when I heard it described as (anti-corpo) pro-genAI
so, pro the technology but fuck the big players in the scene… fuck the big players in any scene
much more selfhosted genAI stuff in those comms than your big names (I think, the corpo side of it has turned me off the whole jam too so I don’t browse them or anything but the position isn’t so at odds with the anarchism imo)
my first read I thought you meant STP and I was like ??? how do u make that mistake??
actually it’s a really cool story, Chris Cornell is the vocalist in Temple but he was struggling to hit the low notes on that song and Eddie was in the studio waiting to practice with Pearl jam and just stepped up and started singing that part, next time he was around Chris asked him to record it.
was Eddie’s first time on any record apparently! i didn’t know that part until today
I’ve always loved the way Chris explains it, “When we started rehearsing the songs, I had pulled out “Hunger Strike” and I had this feeling it was just kind of gonna be filler, it didn’t feel like a real song. Eddie was sitting there kind of waiting for a (Mookie Blaylock) rehearsal and I was singing parts, and he kind of humbly—but with some balls—walked up to the mic and started singing the low parts for me because he saw it was kind of hard. We got through a couple choruses of him doing that and suddenly the light bulb came on in my head, this guy’s voice is amazing for these low parts. History wrote itself after that, that became the single.”

1·10 days agomaybe I’m being pedantic or nitpicking but I think saying there’s a significant difference between a cheapo car and a midrange one is a bit off. a 90s Corolla will get you from point a to point b just as well as a ~10 year old one.
maybe the ride will be smoother on the newer car and if you can get some kind of warranty (are those going the way of the dodo bird? i would expect that to be the next step of the enshittification tbh) that’s worth something…
that said I will agree that the difference between cheapo and midrange is definitely bigger than the difference between midrange and luxury
i was sitting trying to think of something, first that came to mind is the black parade (the whole album) by mcr but it’s not really guilty, it’s really good. then came Radiohead who I got into right before thoms really bad Israel stance, which made it much more guilty… THEN I remembered it’s Kanye. 1000% Kanye. My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy is one of my fav albums of all time, and it’s extremely unfortunate. i used to argue that Kanye had a point with every fucked up thing he said and that he just articulated it extremely poorly up until the maga and Nazi shit. now it just makes me sad that he makes really good music.

4·11 days agoyeah understood. it sure sounds like drag which is the only other one of those accounts I’ve come across.
personally I think They have unpopular opinions that They’re passionate (to many: annoying) about and I think defed before They do any of the "what if"s people are listing is too extreme
that said, if They do unban Themself or make more accounts on Their instance to evade bans my vote instantly changes to defed but as of now I don’t think it’s a reasonable move

9·11 days agoyes, refusing to use someone’s preferred pronouns is transphobic, regardless of how you feel about them. basic human respect. how is this still up for debate in your mind?

42·12 days agobeing as I haven’t seen any evidence that these are all the same person, very yes.
pretending for a moment that we’re certain these are all the same person (I think it’s likely) still yes. i see a young ND Trans person trying to find the identity that suits them much more than I see a malicious troll committing ban evasion, but maybe that’s more me projecting than it is Them.
i think a vote if They end up doing that with “They are unbanning Themself” would easily pass, I don’t think we need to do it preemptively

12·12 days agoi feel like a broken record here but I feel like defed on the back of “They could do this thing” is unreasonable.
if that does happen I say we should defed immediately and I think a vote on “They unbanned Themself” would definitely pass.
p.s. you missed a couple capitals near the end I think, unintentionally I’m sure

2·12 days agowell that is a much worse accusation than anything in the main post, do you have receipts of it?
no worries if you don’t want to make them, but if substantiated that might be enough to convince me to defed

72·12 days agolast paragraph is super based. people deserve basic respect even if they are a dick, and also deserve to be called a dick if they are being a dick.
that said, I think your main argument is kinda a slippery slope fallacy. that’s to say I think if we do end up having a flood of bad actors from this instance, we should poll this again with that as the reason why. i don’t think defed because “They have the opportunity to flood bad actors” is reasonable, personally.

116·12 days agoall very reasonable before the addendum, you’re being transphobic. the question of “would you be able to tell when spoken?” is moot because we’re not speaking. we’re on the internet where you can tell.
that’s all to say, I appreciate your arguments that are relevant and not your transphobic irrelevant little nugget (that you were specifically asked not to attempt to relitigate) at the end

26·12 days agowhat is your definition of intolerant here? I’ve seen some atrocious takes (multiple in this post tbh) but nothing I would consider truly intolerant…

92·12 days agooh huh I didn’t realize Grail was Drag but it tracks. i appreciated that Drag’s pronouns made me think about pronouns in a way that they/them hasn’t for a long time. that said, I can understand the people who felt it was “attack helicopter” adjacent (patently not the blatantly transphobic camp, and there were a lot of them)
I think They are harmless and defederating is too extreme. the crime of being annoying doesn’t warrant excommunication, I think people can individually block if they find Them annoying (cool that Their pronouns make that sentence make sense in a way it wouldn’t without the capitalization :P )
I think it would be reasonable to reassess this proposal if They started doing targeted harassment of our users or communities but I don’t think They are.
also, I feel like a lot of the emotions involved here have more to do with the alts/priors than Grail Themself. have They specifically said anywhere that those are accounts They ran or is there some other definitive proof of those accounts all being the same person behind them?
I’m not doubting the connection, merely asking because if the accounts aren’t definitely the same person I think that changes things
i know you didn’t ask me but yes I would like that very very much.
oh huh ive never heard of Desoxyn being prescribed for ADHD, I was under the impression it was only prescribed for extreme cases of narcolepsy

I’m gonna skip 1 and come back to it at the end
yes I think there are definitely people willing to do a simple task to create things everybody needs (screws) to make things, plenty of people. the people who produce food and need screws (all of the food producers) will feed the screw makers’ families. they have a very obvious incentive to keep their screw makers alive even if we’re being superficial in the way capitalism has trained us to be (in an anarchist/communist/socialist society we don’t feed and house and heal people based on how useful they are. we give them what they need because they deserve it because they’re people, their existence makes them valuable and worthy of the things they need)
no incentive to make good screws? what??? they’re using those screws in their own house too!! you gotta be trolling tbh, what?? people making food will make sure it’s safe to eat because they’re eating it too!! in what universe is governmental oversight the only way to guarantee quality?
people deserve the things they need to have to exist, just by simple right of them existing. “from each according to their ability, to each according to their needs.” there is more than enough food and housing in the world to feed and house everybody, the only reason we don’t is the greed of the ruling class
ok back to 1, I think that people would still make these devices even if they owned the means of production but if they didn’t that means that they were not valuable as the flow chart says
getting to part 2 I’m half convinced this is just trolling but I’ll still post this in case it’s not
