Don’t know exactly why, but this has always got to me, hits some spot nothing else prior ever had, and nothing else still has not since.

Translated to English, it’s something like:

“I have no will or energy, but I shall climb / this one last hill / after the rain you can see so far from here”

It doesn’t translate well, but something about it really resonates with me. I’ve lived with clinic depression for so long, and I’ve been so close to giving in, but always just choosing to climb that one last hill gives some perspective and after all these years… here I am.

I’m too tired to continue, but I’ll fight this one more fight before I fall to my eternal slumber. And after the fight, as the dust settles, the rains stop… well, the view is beautiful. The world is beautiful. But I’m tired… too tired to go on. So I shall only fight this one more fight before I get my peace. One last glance at the beauty. Ah, one more fight, but no more, and I’ll return back up this hill and this view shall be my last. But it’s so beautiful. Only one more fight, and… And so on and so on.

It just feels like I belong in those words.

Mine is a bit old already, the first m1 air, and I haven’t a bad word to say. Although I mostly live in the terminal anyway, zellij, aerospace, alacritty, fresh as my ide, very elaborate sketchybar for ricing and all that. I’ve not yet faced many problems I couldn’t solve via terminal or a temporary boot into the whatever unsafe mode the newer os versions have brought.

The aluminium chassis has been incredible and I can still open the lid with a single finger without needing the other hand. No other laptop I’ve ever tried has been able to manage that, even if it sounds so simple.

But because I already live in a riced up i3-ish environment instead of the actual macos gui, switching to linux is mostly about migrating my personal dotfiles to equivalents I already have set up for a few of my systems at home and various remotes.

So the change won’t be big in impact. Only thing I foresee myself missing is the lid and build quality and battery life

I can live with most of the other stuff, since the quality is good and they are hassle-free devices with Unix-like conventions, they last long, feel fantastic to use; Despite the price, despite the ring-kissing of Trump, despite being a mega corporate spreading its capitalistic cancer across the globe… all because the alternatives have been even worse.

Union busting is where I draw the line though, no matter if it’s in the sale or manufacturing or design side or whatever. This is the first one I hear about, I’ve not been aware of any earlier instances, mostly because I don’t follow stuff so tightly, I am almost certain it has happened before, but now that I have it in front of my eyes I can no longer abide it in my blissful ignorance.

This marks the day they lost me as a long-term customer. Perhaps ought to have happened earlier, but for me, it happened today.

I encourage others to consider the same.

Not really sure what I’ll do after these current devices die on me, but now it’s clear to me it can’t be apple. Google’s been dead to me a long time, same for Sony, Samsung, most other big players.

I guess we’ll see what the landscape is like in 5 years.

Good to keep in mind it is still an oppressive theocracy with public killings and their own flavor of violent regime thugs, working above laws, just like Russia has their militia and US has their ICE etc.

But, in comparison to this current flavor of the US, I too find myself preferring Iran here, and not only because they are the victim here, which is just bonkers in any objective sense. The world is just nuts.

Yeah, it’s just the old classic of choosing between doing the right thing or the self-sustaining thing. Choosing the right thing will probably be extremely unpopular once it catches up and it’s time to pay, and it will destroy a lot of your political capital. But it is the right thing to do.

Choosing political self-preservation over the right thing isn’t meaningfully different from choosing the wrong thing.

I get the instinct to signal that you know the other side of it is evil, unethical, by abstaining, but it’s the same net effect in practice. It will pass, it would’ve passed either way, you chose the wrong side of history, even if you thought you were clever, for… what? When this shit finally after decades and centuries catches up with us and we have to face our actual, real legacy, try to make it right though it never can… you can then say, to your constituents, that you didn’t vote for this?

It’s such a fucking cynical thing, the political landscape of today.

I get that there’s no winning play here, politically, if you are one of the oppressors of the old, but exactly one of the ways this could’ve gone, and could go in future too, is actually ethical and proper. Everything else is just playing for minimal political points for self-preservation that changes nothing other than small, irrelevant local things in this grand scale.

All this to say I get what this is and why it is done, but it’s just so cynical it almost makes it worse than straight out voting no like the US. At least they aren’t being a rat about it, straight up own to their stance that it was all good in their opinion. At least that’s shooting straight, not ratty.

Not to defend them or completely dismiss their part in all that, pretty sure it was just someone else sending the fiverr video to them and them opening it while streaming. But the latter incident, where they shouted some slurs on air while playing some game, that’s I think more inexcusable. But I always got the impression they never were actual nazi or far right despite the subject matter of the incidents, it’s more just them being an idiot and trying to be funny and edgy for content and missing the target entirely on a couple of occasions. I think the aftermath speaks for itself, they did some reflecting and ended up changing the formula and content type entirely, and we are now seeing the fruits of that effort.

I don’t mean to belittle the shit they’ve pulled, but I also don’t want to paint anyone irredeemable, even less when they actually manage to do introspection and change. We should encourage that and highlight that instead. I’d reserve the unconditional hate and spite for those that deserve it, that don’t change, don’t reflect, perhaps actually mean the things they do and say, with passion.

Technically, at least on vulkan, these things can be inferred or intercepted with just an injected layer, though it’s not trivial. If you store a buffer history for depth you can fairly accurately compute an approximation of actual (isolated) mesh surfaces from the pov of the view. But that isn’t the same as real polygons and meshes that the textures and all map to… pretty sure you can’t run that pipeline real time even with tiled temporal ss. Almost definitely works on the output directly, perhaps some buffers like motion vectors and depth for the same frame that they’ve needed since dlss2 anyway. But pretty suspect to claim full polygons, unless running with tight integration from the game itself, even then the frame budgets are crazy tight as it is, nevermind running extra passes on that level

Yeah, but it’s not obvious right now how. But Linux has good bones, comparatively, no reason it wouldn’t other than existing giants having a lot of incentive to maintain their hold on the market.

But should that ever change, one reason or another, Linux seems like the lowest friction alternative. It already exists and is robust.

Companies being inherently useful does not track. They can be actively useless and still generate revenue. I guess it matters how we define use and utility here. But if we define it by their capability to generate revenue, then they are exactly as useful as gambling is.

I was born in the wilderness of Nordic Lappland, no cities at all anywhere near, small villages only, spread very sparsely across a lot of nothingness.

No light pollution at all. Our village didn’t even have street lights anywhere outside the local school vicinity (we never had more than 20 or so students in total, across all the elementary grades through pre to 1-6!). 300 residents total. Closest proper town was roughly 200km away.

Yet, I have never seen the Milky Way. I’ve seen plenty of stars, there’s always stars unless extremely cloudy. And we’d get auroras almost bi-daily throughout the polar winters. But no Milky Way. No purple to speak of.

I wonder if this is tied to the location within earth? Always had a clear sky, no artificial lights polluting it even from afar. No cities, no smogs of any kind. But never did see purple or the Milky Way. In winters we also have literal months when the sun doesn’t even rise properly at all, just night all the time. So sky is very visible.

There’s no motivation for the bully to see any reason there, their stance is that if they wanted, they can just take all they want, they are more powerful. For the same reason rehabilitation is the only sensible reason to even maintain a prison system in the first place: People can change.

This response is just for the “ever” part though. And that framing. I think there are things other than the mentioned thieving, raping and terrorism, perfectly valid as a reason to reject a neighbor, that has no real path toward rehabilitation. I like to think anyone deserves a second chance, no matter the crime, but that only really works with crime as defined today. If someone’s a deplorable asshole, and as such, never actually goes through rehabilitation because it’s not a crime, I think that’s a valid reason to never want them as a neighbor.

So there’s a distinction. Those going through rehabilitation are redeemable in my eyes, always, until proven otherwise by wasting the chances they get.

Those never rehabilitating, i.e doing shit that’s not illegal by today’s standards (or at least never put into the rehabilitation pipeline for it), aren’t.

And I think that is the reason you don’t want them as neighbors. Not that they’ve done crimes, that is redeemable, if you believe in the system. If not, why waste resources with prisons? What’s the point if the thinking is they’ll always just be bad and do hurtful things?

No, you don’t want them because they are fucking shitty people and never suffer the consequences for it, i.e never rehabilitate.

Honestly, it’s only a problem if only a few follow their convictions and the rest don’t. But if a big minority were to arise, even surpass democrats, they’d have to finally start thinking about changing the system, lest they get dropped because of this very fucking system. But that only ever works if those who shit on dems actually put the money where their mouth is. As long as anyone is going to give in and eat the shit of voting for d just because they are not r, not because they want to, then it’s always going to just go to shit and benefit the opposite side. So either everyone has to accept to drop their ideals and morals and vote d consistently, or everyone who feels dissatisfied them, everyone, votes third way. Anything in between is just winning for the r side.
