Sponsored top-level domains (sTLDs) are specialized extensions operated by organizations that establish and enforce eligibility requirements for registrants. Unlike generic TLDs which are open to anyone, sponsored TLDs serve specific communities: .edu is restricted to accredited post-secondary institutions, .gov to United States government entities, .museum to verified museums, .aero to the air transport industry, and .coop to cooperative associations. The sponsoring organization acts as a gatekeeper, ensuring that only qualified applicants can register domains under these extensions. This restricted nature gives sponsored TLDs a higher degree of trust and authenticity — a .edu domain, for example, carries inherent credibility that a .com domain does not.
