Hi — I'm Sean Davis 👋

I'm an engineering leader and open source contributor. I believe software exists to make life simpler and more empowering — and that building it well is fundamentally a human problem, not just a technical one.

What I Work On Today

My current focus spans both commercial and open-source environments:

  • Engineering leadership & platform stewardship
Scaling teams, modernizing delivery practices, and balancing near-term execution with long-term technical health.

  • Linux platform & distribution engineering
Release engineering, dependency curation, documentation, and governance within Xubuntu.

  • Cloud-native & modern systems
Containerized workloads, CI/CD, atomic/immutable operating systems, and operational reliability.

  • Developer experience & enablement
Improving tooling, documentation, and workflows so teams can do their best work.

Open Source & Community

Open source has been a constant through my career — not just as code, but as community, mentorship, and stewardship.

I've been contributing to and leading open source projects since 2012 — Ubuntu Member since 2013, Xubuntu Technical Lead since 2014. I've shipped applications and shaped the desktop experience for millions of users: Catfish, MenuLibre, Mugshot, LightDM GTK Greeter, and others. I've learned more from maintaining these systems than from building them. Maintenance teaches you to build for the engineer who inherits your work, not just for yourself. And it teaches you that good systems outlast their creators when you design them to.

My contributions have included:

  • Long-term maintenance of widely used end-user software
  • Release and platform ownership within Xubuntu
  • Mentoring contributors and maintainers
  • Helping projects evolve sustainably as they grow

While my role today is more focused on leadership and enablement than day-to-day coding, open source remains a core part of how I think about software and teams.

What I Believe

Leadership is influence, not title. The best ideas should win, not the loudest voices. Leave every system, team, and codebase better than you found it.
