We found that tumor suppressors preferentially target a rare subpopulation of premalignant epithelial cells that orchestrates the assembly of cancer-like niches during pancreatic tumor initiation. Physiological or pharmacological depletion of this epithelial state collapses their associated niches, blunting malignant transformation.
