Software development and computer science

About The Author

Family portrait

I am Bernard Matthias Igiri, the author of Y = Code. I am also the founder of Iron Oxide Labs LLC, a venture I launched in 2023 to advance the adoption of the Rust programming language in enterprise application development.

I am a husband, a father, an Iraq war veteran, and a software engineer. I have been programming computers for most of my life, starting from my childhood in 1994. Over the years, I have developed software in over 35 programming languages, with enterprise web application development, becoming the cornerstone of my career. Having written JavaScript since 2000, I was often the most experienced JavaScript developer on the team, which naturally lead me to become the premier UI/UX expert.

In 2001, during my first year of college, I was recruited to the US Army Reserves, just after the 9/11 attacks. I served as a Psychological Operations specialist, including a 2006 deployment to Iraq for Operation Iraqi Freedom. My military service taught me the value of discipline, perseverance, and teamwork, but most importantly of all, it gave me the confidence to face any challenge.

I am the son of a Trinidadian-American nurse and a Nigerian nuclear physicist. Although my parents' divorce kept my father away; I grew up in a home shaped by science, education, and a deep Roman Catholic faith. Born in Brooklyn, NY, and raised in Maryland near Washington, D.C., I am walking melting pot of American culture. This may be why I love misfits. I have a special empathy for the misunderstood, and a potent love for the underdog.

When I am not working at a computer, I love to be outdoors. Hiking, camping, mountain biking, and distance running keep me healthy and grounded. Nothing is more soothing to me, than being surrounded by trees and wilderness. The air itself, feels more refreshing in the forest.
