Night mode

Night mode is not just about night lighting

You might think that night mode is the same as turning on/off the night lights. In the Segment Controller ecosystem, we find more complex solutions.

There is a 5V output on the Ambient Panel that can be loaded with 800mA, to which LEDs can be switched, but still the night mode:

  • It can be switched on the Master Panel with a button or switch.
  • Its settings can also be made on the Master Panel.

The night mode is independent of the Ambient Panel, almost all panels depend on whether it is night or not. We considered it important that the night mode could be switched on/off using only the Master Panel: that is why we put the buttons on the Master Panel.

Night street

You can’t activate night mode with the Keyboard Panel, but there are dedicated inputs on the Master Panel. You can decide whether you want to operate night mode with a button or a switch. (It is recommended to use only one of the two!)

In addition to the manual night mode setting, you can use three night mode automations:

  • With random switching – just like with the other automations – you can specify the approximate duration of day and night. The approximate setting can be completely accurate or random (realistic) in a wide range.
  • Day and night starting at a specific time*: with this you can set when morning day should come and evening night should come.
  • Based on your geolocation settings, night mode is set at sunrise and sunset*.
Internet access

Time-related settings (*) are only available if the Master Panel can connect to the Internet to obtain accurate time information.

Impact on other panels

Almost all panels can be dependent on whether it is night or day. Each of the random automations can be set to work always, only during the day or only at night. This allows us to program a variety of realistic events. Let’s look at some examples:

  • City noise can only be heard during the day.
  • Dog barking can only be heard during the day.
  • Wolf howling can only be heard at night.
  • Welding light effect can only be turned on during the day.
  • Staircase lighting can only be turned on at night.
  • Windmill can only be turned on during the day.

Sync between multiple Master Panels

If you have multiple Master Panels, it would be nice if night came at the same time. There is a setting for this, which is enabled by default. This way, Master Panels on the same LAN network will notify their neighbors about the night mode and apply it, thus staying in sync.

This has another advantage: you need to switch only on one Master Panel manually or set it to automatic (exact time or sunset), and the other Master Panels will automatically follow the change of nights and days.
