NorCal FTC Regionals – Independence High School
Last weekend Omega 9656 attended our first ever Regional Championship at Independence High School! After an intense 2-week rebuild, our team entered the competition ready to win, and it was an awesome experience seeing and competing with all of the other FTC teams in Northern California.
Unfortunately, some parts of our new rebuild didn’t work as intended, but we are proud of getting 10th seed in the Silicon Division. This entire Rover Ruckus season has been a huge success for our team, and we can’t wait to see where the future takes us!

- Retighten drivetrain motor mounts
What Was Accomplished
- Started reformatting our sponsorship email into a formal business letter
Notes/Additional Information
- At the qualifier, our chain kept coming undone because of the motor mounts, so we need to take the top layer of the drivetrain to tighten the motor mount, which is why now we’re reattaching the top layer of the drivetrain
- GOATS came over to our workspaces today
Reflection/Takeaways
- Trinity needs to take a break
- We need to do a better at doing binder entries

Qualifer 3 – Meeting Entry
Date: 1/12/19
Time: 7:00-6:00
Attendance: Trinity, Tommy, Rebecca, Nidhir, Ananya, Sriteja
Plans/Goals
- This is our last chance to advance to regionals, either through actually winning or earning the Inspire Award, but we need to actually have fun
- Don’t stress about too much about advancing
- Last time we put too much pressure on ourselves and couldn’t enjoy being at the competition
- We barely have any prep time, so we likely won’t do too well anyways
What Was Accomplished
- We got nominated for a lot of awards and became a Alliance Captain, which was awesome!
- 3rd in Connect
- 2nd in Control
- 2nd in Inspire
- 2nd in Innovate
- 1st in Think
- Placed 4th out of 16 in elimination rounds
- 3rd seed alliance captain
- Won 4 qualification matches, lost 1
- Made it to finals
- We got a lottery ticket, giving us a 12/17 chance to qualify to regionals
Qualifier 3 – Berean Christian High School, Walnut Creek
Yesterday our team was notified that a spot had opened up at the Walnut Creek Qualifier that was going to be held the following day. After deliberating, we decided to go just for fun, as a last hurrah before officially going offseason. We were able to pull together a skeleton crew of 6 members.
This qualifier ended up being a major milestone for our team! Our robot performed consistently and scored well for our alliance partners–well enough to be 4th seed (4th place) in the qualification rounds. This put us in a position to select our alliance partner for the semifinals, and have a chance at getting into finals and thus qualifying for regionals.
After advancing through the semi-finals, Omega unfortunately lost the extremely close final, but nevertheless we are proud of getting this far–the farthest we’ve ever gone in Omega history.
We won the following awards:
- Finalist Alliance Captain
- Think Award
- Inspire Award, 1st Runner Up
- Control Award, 1st Runner Up
- Connect Award, 2nd Runner Up
We are so proud of our entire team for working hard to constantly improve the robot and code, specifically: Nidhir Guggilla (Captain), Justin Do (Co-Captain), Tommy Vo Tran (Programming Lead), Trinity Chen (Mechanical Lead), and our mentor, Kevin, who was very busy that day but still showed up in support. We would also like to thank our parents for supporting us in this last-minute endeavor and throughout the season. Lastly, we would like to thank our semi-finals and finals alliance partner, Team Future 14473.
Next stop: Regionals! (If we are lucky and win the lottery!)

Qualifier 2 – Meeting Entry
Date: 1/6/19
Time: 7:00 AM-6:00 PM
Attendance: Justin, Trinity, Tommy, Rebecca, Sriteja, Jonathan
Plans/Goals
- Have Fun
- Prevent disconnects.
- Perform than the last Fremont Qualifier (seed higher than 14th, have a better qual record than 1-4, be a contender for at least one judged award)
- Stretch Goal: Make it to the semifinals
- Extreme Stretch Goal: Qualify for Regional Competitions
Qualifier 2 – Cisco Building
Today, Omega went to our second qualifier of the season, located at Cisco in San Jose and hosted by Tacobots (FTC 11099). We improved greatly from our performance in our last qualifier, having an extremely reliable latching mechanism and improving our autonomous program to consistently sample the gold mineral. Even our win-loss record improved to 2-3 (we mostly lost due to disconnections and bad luck).
Because of our hard work, we were able to take home:
- Rockwell Collins Innovate Award
- Inspire Award, 3rd Place
- Control Award, 2nd Place
Preparation for 2nd Qualifier: Meeting Entries #49-54
Meeting 49
Date: 12/29/18
Time: 1:00-6:00
Attendance: Justin, Trinity, Rebecca
Plans/Goals
- Finish cable management
- Figure out solution to hanging problem
What Was Accomplished
- Mounted electronics
- Found solution to hanging problem by moving the latch back
- A strong spring was used to tension the return cable
Notes/Additional Information
- We have ordered cables that we need to connect the phone and the robot which allows us to test our code
Reflection/Takeaways
- This is the first time we are slightly ahead of schedule! All we need to now is code.
- At first we were hesitant to rebuild, but the risk that we took paid off
